Made by over 13 of our artisan partners – all women – in Southern Mexico. Each pillow is made of undyed natural wool, washed, carded and spun by hand on traditional drop spindle. The drop spindle is known locally in Mexico as a malacate (mah-lah-cah-teh). The wool is then woven on the backstrap loom. Each pillow is made to help provide a positive stream of income for 15 artisans in two Mexican states in Southern Mexico and take 20- 25 days to create. The Natural pillows are made with undyed natural wool (ivory base), the dusty rose rose pillows are dyed with organic nopal and cochineal to create the blush pink look. Cochineal is a scale insect that lives on the paddle of the cactus, which produce carmine that results in a brilliant red dye and nopal is a type of cactus. Pompoms are made and applied by hand and then cushions are cut and sewn on a sewing maching
- Take care not to pull on the pompoms, or they may come loose
